Writing Question of the Week
I'm going to attempt to implement a new feature to my blog, entitled "Writing Question of the Week." I'm hoping this will increase feedback from readers and add a much-needed dose of interaction to this blog.To start things off, I'd like to hear your thoughts on the Pros/Cons of working for yourself. You can be as specific as you'd like. There are some obvious pros to working for yourself, but I've experienced some drawbacks as well.
What's your take on the issue? I'm interested to hear your thoughts, so please feel free to leave them in a comment below.
Best,
Denise

Thanks for posting the question, Denise. Looks like I get to be the one to start.
Firstly, I simply enjoy working for myself. I am way too surly to have someone boss me around all day. Just kidding...sort of.
Secondly, there is flexibility with our jobs. For instance, when there is a dry spell, I get to stand out on the exit ramp off of I-40 holding a sign and a can asking for donations. Seriously, THAT is the downfall...not enough work at times. However, sometimes there is too much work.
I need to do better on pricing myself too. My rates have been rising because I find that I tend to sell myself too cheaply with some services.
All in all, I like freelance work and have been self employed since November 2002.
Next!
Thank you for your response, Matt. There's definitely flexibility with the type of work we do -- but that can pose a problem when a dryspell hits.
However, I'd much rather take a dryspell here and there then to be stuck behind a desk for 8 hours a day, working to make someone else rich! :)
What I like about working for myself... ummm... no other person as boss. That's about it. Oh, and I can be a wiseass whenever I darn well please.
What I like about working for a company. Regular paycheck. Others with a common goal with whom I get to brainstorm. Regular flow of work. Bennies.
I'll resist the urge to list those things which I do not like about each category.
I just found your blog today through Julia Temlyn's blog.
I just posted on this same topic on my blog over at www.writingthoughts.com. My post is a compare/contrast between working at home and working in corporate America.
I like your blog.
Laura,
I will definitely check your blog out later today when I have some free time :) Thanks for stopping by!
Pro: I have a hookah set up on my desk and can puff away on strawberry tabacco while I work
Con: Roommates keep yelling at me to clean up because I'm home more often..."But I'm WORKING!" "No you aren't, you're goofing off on the interwebs!"
um...that's all
